Artificial Colors – The United Kingdom and Australia have linked behavioral problems and hyperactivity in children to the use of artificial dyes in foods. In 2008 they banned the use of eight different dyes and demanded that food manufactures use natural products; but here in the United States, the same producers, such as General Mills, Nestle’ and Coke are allowed to continue selling us the same products with the banned dyes. Michael Jacobson, director of the Center for Science in the Public Interest in Washington, D.C., called on the federal government to make changes. He states, “That kind of double standard is shameful.” Unfortunately, the banned dyes, Yellow 5 and 6, Red 3 and 40, Blue 1 and 2, Green 3, Orange B are still being used in the US.

Aunt Jemima Blueberry Waffles contain no blueberries. The blue bits are Red 40 and Blue 2.

Yo-plait Go Gurt contains Blue 1, Red 40, Yellow 5 and High Fructose Corn Syrup.

Gatorade has a variety of the UK banned dyes found in all the flavors.
