Eat! The Benefits of Smart Eating

Basal Metabolic Rate, or the minimum of calories that a person needs to sustain his or her normal body functions such as breathing or heart function at rest, is a key proponent in achieving lifestyle goals.  Although weight loss is attributed to an increase in caloric expenditure and a decrease in caloric intake, not eating enough calories can be harmful and make it difficult to lose weight

When we don’t give our bodies enough food, they can go into starvation mode, where our bodies will hold onto any fat in order to maintain life.  By eating fewer calories than our basal metabolic rates require, our bodies enter this starvation mode and weight loss becomes more difficult.  Through eating a sufficient amount of food to give enough calories to our bodies, we can increase energy expenditure to make our lifestyle goals achievable.  The 5 key tips to healthy eating for an active lifestyle include:

  • Balance your meals- Make sure to provide your body with foods from all the food groups! Eating a balanced breakfast and lunch is just as important as having a balanced supper.
  • Maximize with nutrient-packed foods- Give your body the nutrients it needs by eating a variety of nutrient packed foods including whole grains, lean protein, fruits and vegetables, and low-fat or fat-free dairy. Eat food with lower amounts of solid fats, added sugars, and sodium.  Stay away from processed food and move towards fresh!
  • Power up with protein- Protein is essential for building and repairing muscle even if you aren’t trying to become a body builder! Choose lean or low-fat cuts of beef or pork, and skinless chicken or turkey.  Get your protein from seafood twice a week.  Don’t forget: quality protein sources come from plant-based foods as well!
  • Drink Water- Stay hydrated by drinking water instead of sugary drinks. Keep a reusable water bottle with you to always have water on hand.
  • Reach your goals- Food is NOT the enemy! Smart eating can help further promote the healthy lifestyle we are trying to achieve!  Don’t forget to ask the HealthQuest Team with any questions or concerns, big or small!
