Most people believe that one can never have too much of a good thing- namely exercise. However, there is such a thing as over exercising which can have many negative effects. Julie Kaminski, licensed Wellcoach at HealthQuest Fitness, dispels some of the common mistakes people make whilst exercising and shares how to get the most out of a workout.
For those who are athletes in training with increased performance as an ultimate goal Kaminski suggests, “decreasing the rate of training intensity and making sure there is adequate recovery time in between workouts.” For these athletes, excessive exercising is commonly referred to as, “over training” and can have many counterproductive results such as decreased performance, loss of coordination, prolonged recovery, and decreased ability to fight off infection. There also can be some negative mental affects such as depression and reduced self-esteem. For the average person who exercises daily with wellness and well-being maintenance in mind, over exercising can also occur. Kaminski advises to implement variety into your workout. Going full force everyday may seem like a good thing at first, but will surely begin to ware the body down shortly after. When weight-loss is the ultimate goal, lasting success is, “best achieved by a consistent caloric deficit over a long period of time.” Eating healthy and working out in moderation is the rule of thumb in this circumstance.
Like everything else, moderation and having the correct information is the key in any venture. When working out, set a list of goals, create a reasonable schedule, and enjoy the quest towards optimal health.
